Tara Mantra: Streem
(pronounced S T R E E M)
Known as both the savior and the illuminator is the force of Goddess Tara. She is the second of the Mahavidya, great wisdom goddesses, and has a soothing presence when help is needed. Tara has the gentler appearance in this goddess tribe. She mostly appears in these two forms: In her fierce form she looks a lot like Kali, with her tongue hanging out and a garland of severed heads or skulls around her neck, her consort is a blessed being in the form of a snake worn around her neck, her hair is tied up in a knot above her head and she is wearing a tiger skin as a skirt. Although unlike Kali her general demeanor is approachable. She is stepping forward with her left foot, gesturing to meet you. She is the light that reveals what is needed in a situation, either to overcome obstacles or to bring something forth into creation.
This creative energy, one tantra (sacred text( has conveyed, was enough with her consort Lord Akshobhya to give birth to Surya the Sun. That indeed is mighty, the Sun gives enough light for all the plants to grow and all species to evolve on this planet. Tara translates as star, also as the one who helps you across, she gives solutions, form to ideas, sacred sounds to allow the mind to transcend its inner chatter. Her most welcoming mantra is the syllable OM. You can use the sound STREEM with your Yantra, or OM STREEM as you gaze at the bindu, the central dot. This upward pointing triangle in the Yantra is there to guide you forwards on your path.
Tara is also seen as a form of Blue Saraswati, the goddess of speech and wisdom. Tara is bringing the sounds to life, giving them form. Help with oration and self-expression can come from the support of Tara. Overall this is a compassionate form of the Goddess, some energy of the mother which is easy to invoke and generous in her blessings. If you are feeling like a little guidance is required in your life then call her up. Jai Ma!
